Danielle and Rick – Excitement in Grand Rapids

There are a lot of exciting things that happened around this session. After all, it was my first opportunity since March 2010 to photograph my best friend and her husband. Danielle had bought me a plane ticket to Grand Rapids for my birthday present, so we knew that would be the perfect time to get out and take some pictures. After I got there, we realised that the only day we could do it was in this brief window of time on my last Friday there. Danielle had said that as long as they were living in Michigan, they better have snow in some of their pictures. Given that this is their last winter there, that Friday was our shot. The only problem was that there hadn’t been much snow at all yet and the forecast was not looking favourable. When it finally did snow and looked like it would still be around on Friday, we were pretty happy. When Friday finally came, we were excited to get the errands of the day done so we could get on to pictures that afternoon. The problem with errands is that they always end up taking longer than you expect. Danielle and I got to the deck where we were to meet Rick and waited for him to arrive. As we did, we watched the sun begin to set. I joked that I was going to have 10 minutes for their session. My joke ended up being the truth. We started the session and quickly started to freeze. I may call Michigan home, but I’m a Georgia native. Rick and Danielle are also native Southerners. 17 degrees just isn’t our friend. So, in 10 minutes, we ran around Rosa Parks Circle and did what we could. It was truly exciting.

What is most exciting to me in looking at these pictures now is what we didn’t know then. On Sunday morning, Rick went to work. Danielle and I began making plans for my last day there. By Sunday night, Rick and Danielle knew that their family was expanding to three. That is true excitement.
